So today we had some pretty cool and realistic medical training. They had these dummies that breath and bleed. After a short refresher class on some advanced first aid, we broke up into groups of three and went outside the class room. Once we heard the gunfire and mortars, we had to run in to our respective dummies and immediately start addressing their wounds. The one I was on had an amputated leg, open chest wound, wounded arm and a collapsed lung.
We first had to apply a tourniquet onto the leg, then move the patient to a safe area. We then began treating the other wounds. As we were working on him, he developed tension pneumothorax, and I had to put a 14 guage needle in his chest to relieve the air pressure. It was very realistic with fake blood all over the place, the training yelling at us and the sounds of battle. Lots of fun and a great training exercise. I have some great pics that I will upload later.

That's some fine training you be getting, Bruce! I know who I'd want to have my back next time I'm in a crazy bar brawl or something, and come down with some tension pneumothoraxia. Only 14 guage, eh? Yeah, no problem. :-)
